L’Atelier sur L’eau (The Workshop on the Water) aims to transform the primarily vacant lower peninsula of the Ile de Piot in Avignon, France, into a theater complex to support the Festival D’Avignon, one of Europe's largest annual theater festivals.

 

The site concept was designed as a collaboration between Howie Li and Katia Peppas, and the Seasonal Theater concept was designed by Katia Peppas.

Site Concept

Situating the major program along the West Bank of the island takes advantage of the views across the water. The theaters utilize existing ramp structures found on the island to as multipurpose performances spaces.

 

On the East Bank, translucent stone structures will glow from within after dark, creating beacons down a meandering path.
